Tips for developing a Habitat Preservation Area Management Plan

When you submit a proposed area management plan for an Upland Wildlife Habitat Preservation, you must include the following, in a narrative format, for each category:

Introduction

  • Site name, location, size, legal description, access to the property, out parcels (if applicable), encroachments (if applicable), and adjacent areas
    • Label map as Map 1
  • Site history, including past, present and proposed uses
    • Label map as Map 2
    • Map 2 should depict managed areas and proposed developed areas

Natural resources

  • Natural plant communities (habitat)
    • Label map as Map A
    • Map A should include preserved areas and protective buffers
    • This segment must include a vegetative cover description using FLUCCS and including acreage
  • Fish and Wildlife resources
    • Label map as Map B
    • Be sure to provide descriptions
  • Endangered, threatened, and species of special concern
    • Label map as Map C
    • Be sure to provide descriptions
  • Geologic features and topography
    • Label map as Map D
  • General soil types and drainage
    • Label map as Map E

Management objectives and procedures

This section must address the objective(s) of the management proposal in accordance with DRP Manuel Section 4.1.6.1.6 and the associated effects on the following:

  • Fish and wildlife resources
  • Natural habitats, including significant and essential wildlife habitats
  • Wildlife corridor
  • Proposed passive uses
  • Timing of implementation – avoid breeding seasons if possible
  • Party implementing management proposal
  • Management responsibility of plan

Restoration

Describe the method(s) of restoration to be undertaken. These methods should include:

  • Natural succession
  • Prescribed burning
  • Exotic plant removal
  • Enhancement through transplanting of species
  • Improvements of surface water quality and/or surface water elevation enhancement

Protection

Discuss preservation method(s) which may include:

  • Establishment of easements
  • Restricted access, i.e. signage, fencing, patrolling, etc.
  • Measures to be taken that will deter poaching, dumping, trespassing, etc.

Monitoring

  • Discuss the procedures for assessing the progress of plan implementation and term of monitoring
  • Identify primary and other agents in maintenance responsibilities
