Adoption process, types, and fees
Dogs and cats are available for adoption at the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center (PRC). Add adoptions and pre-adoptions are on a first-come basis and must be done in-person during regular business hours. View the list of adoption and service fees.

Adoption types
There are two types of adoptions: ready-to-go (RTG) and pre-adoption.
- Ready-to-go (RTG)
Pets that have completed their "stray hold" time and have been spayed/neutered and fully vaccinated are considered "ready-to-go." Any pet in a RTG status can go home the same day with no adoption fee. - Pre-adoptions
Pets that are on their stray hold period and still waiting to receive veterinary services are available for pre-adoption but cannot be released until the necessary veterinary services have been administered. Pre-adoption costs range from $35 to $125, which does not include the $20 rabies license fee.
Note: Due to the special needs of small puppies and the fact that most puppies arrive at the shelter with no history, all dogs under the age of 6 months are only available for adoption on a RTG status and cannot be pre-adopted.
