During the Aug. 6, 2025, Board of County Commissioners meeting:
The Board declared August 2025 as Black Business Month. The County’s Minority/Women-Owned Business Enterprise Program and its community partners support Black-owned businesses and their economic impact by providing a significant number of goods, services, and jobs for residents.
Commissioners recognized the Hillsborough County Tax Collector’s Office for winning the 2025 Governor’s Sterling Award for Performance Excellence, further illustrating the office’s dedication to efficiency and quality customer service.
The Board adopted a resolution supporting the nonprofit, Alliance for Global Security (AGS) which is headquartered in Tampa, and its efforts to advance homeland security education. With focus on local and regional government, the organization works to enhance public resilience through foreign and domestic collaboration. AGS will host an international forum in Hillsborough County in April 2026.
Commissioners conducted a public hearing and voted to amend the Hillsborough County Code of Ordinances and Laws relating to trespass towing, immobilization, and rates.
The amendment complies with new state law and will strengthen consumer protection and reinforce industry best practices.
The Board voted to amend a Code Enforcement ordinance to strengthen provisions to ensure the department has the tools it needs to deter citizens from filing unfounded complaints and potentially abusing the complaint process, wasting county resources and tax dollars.
Commissioners adopted the Solid Waste Rate Resolution for Fiscal Year 2026, which includes a 6.8% or $32.88 annual increase per household.
The money collected from the assessment, fees and charges are used to fund the cost of providing disposal and collection services within the County's Solid Waste service area.
Solid waste leaders told the Board that the County collects 1.2 million tons of waste annually and adds 5,000 new customers to service areas each year.
The continuous growth is adding tremendous pressure to solid waste facilities, and the landfill is expected to reach capacity by 2030 and needs to expand to keep up with growing demand.
Staff will continue to explore ways to fund ongoing needs and reduce rate increases through potential grants, charges for residential disposal services and utilizing renewable natural gas.
The next BOCC regular meeting is at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2025. You can watch the meeting live on YouTube on the Hillsborough County Meetings channel.
