During the Sept. 4, 2024, Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting: 

The Board presented a commendation to the organization Mentors for Hillsborough County Veterans for its work in helping service members overcome personal issues so they can fully integrate back into society. 

The Board declared Sept. 4 as Pepin Academies Silver Anniversary Day. 

For 25 years, Pepin Academies has been redefining boundaries and overcoming barriers for students with learning disabilities. 

The schools provide a therapeutic educational environment to help students reach their fullest potential developmentally, social-emotionally, and academically. 

Commissioners approved a Housing Finance Authority bond issuance not to exceed $40 million for the acquisition and rehabilitation of 175 existing multi-family rental housing facilities on North 47th Street in Tampa. 

The Board also approved a bond issuance not to exceed $31.3 million for the acquisition and rehabilitation of 148 existing multi-family rental housing facilities known as Country Oaks Apartments located in the University Area.  

No County funds are being used for either project. 

Commissioners directed County staff to review and amend the County’s towing ordinance to reflect changes in state law, additional consumer protection, and any other best practices for regulating the towing/immobilization industry. 

A majority of the Board voted to approve funding agreements to provide State Housing Initiatives Partnership, or SHIP grant funds, to three not-for-profit agencies: 

  • Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay will receive $3.7 million,. 
  • The Centre for Women, Inc. will receive $2 million. 
  • The East Tampa Business & Community Development Alliance, Inc. will receive $1.35 million. 

  Commissioners approved the First Modification Agreement to provide additional professional architectural/engineering design services and increase the allowance for the African American Arts and Cultural Center Project.  

The African American Arts and Cultural Center Project was approved within the Adopted FY 23-27 Capital Improvement Program and is intended to promote and enhance the community cultural needs. 

A majority of the Board voted to authorize negotiations with the four highest-ranked firms for the opportunity to provide Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funded public services at a total cost of $480,000. 

The Affordable Housing Services Department will negotiate agreements with Enterprising Latinas, Inc., Friends of Joshua House Foundation, Inc., Metropolitan Ministries, Inc., and Seniors in Service of Tampa Bay, Inc. 

The public service initiatives are designed to help Hillsborough County residents in need by providing a variety of support services.
