Approved increases to discounts help offset the cost of trash services for eligible residents
Hillsborough County Solid Waste offers two discounts for qualifying customers on their annual solid waste assessment fees:
On Aug. 21, 2024, the Board of County Commissioners voted to increase these discounts and extend the deadline to apply to Oct. 1, 2024. Approved applications will have the discounts applied on their 2025 tax bill, delivered in November. This extension gives eligible residents additional time to take advantage of the discounts, which can help offset the cost of trash disposal and collection services. Qualifying seniors are eligible for both discounts.
Hardship/Affordability Credit Program
Qualifying low-income homeowners can receive financial assistance to help cover a portion of their annual assessment fees. The solid waste exemption is broken down into a $53 credit for the disposal fee and a $15 credit for the collection fee, totaling a $68 discount. This credit is applied directly to the solid waste fees that appear on homeowners' annual property tax bills.
Applicants must apply for the hardship/affordability credit and submit all required supporting documentation by Oct. 1, 2024.
Residents who have been previously approved must reapply every year.
Senior Citizen Solid Waste Discount
- Senior citizens 65 and older may be eligible for a discount on their solid waste disposal fee
- Senior discount on single-family homes lowers the disposal rate cost to $120.41 from $180.19 for the annual bill, which is a 33% discount or $59.78
- Senior discount on condominiums lowers the disposal rate to $75.92 from $116.12 for the annual bill, which is a 35% discount or $40.20
- Residents must apply for the senior and disability discount and submit all required supporting documentation by Oct. 1, 2024
- Residents who have been previously approved do not need to reapply again unless you move to another home or condo within the County's solid waste area
