Seasonal cleaning tips for household hazardous waste disposal

Spring cleaning is in full bloom, and garages, pools, lawns, and patios across the county are getting their annual refresh. As old paint cans, worn-out batteries smaller than 12-by-12 inches, and empty propane tanks pile up, some items require special handling and cannot be placed at the curb for regular collection.

Household hazardous waste (HHW) includes products with toxic, flammable, corrosive, or reactive ingredients. Common examples are pool chemicals, paint thinners, pesticides, fluorescent lamps, rechargeable batteries, and more. A full list of accepted items is available online.

To make safe disposal simple, Hillsborough County hosts HHW collections on select Saturdays each month from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. (holiday schedules may vary).

First Saturday

Sheldon Road HHW Collection Center - 9805 Sheldon Rd., Tampa, FL 33635

Second Saturday

South County Solid Waste Facility - 13000 U.S. Hwy. 41, Gibsonton, FL 33534

Third Saturday

Hillsborough Heights Solid Waste Facility - 6209 County Road 579, Seffner, FL 33584

All county residents may visit any location during its designated operating day and time. These events offer a convenient drop-off point for items that cannot be placed in household garbage or recycling carts.

A state-issued photo ID with a Hillsborough County residential address is required to drop off your HHW.

For disposal and recycling options for materials other than HHW, please use the Where Does It Go? Guide for county drop off locations and required documentation.
