In-person workshops and webinars are available for little or no charge to help you master your garden, yard, and landscape

Are you interested in conserving water for your landscaping or making compost for your garden? Maybe you just want to grow attractive, low-maintenance plants to enhance your yard. If any of these ideas appeal to you, Hillsborough County Extension Service can help.

A range of free and low-cost horticulture workshops are available to Hillsborough County residents. Upcoming topics include composting, microirrigation, and harvesting rainwater. If you are unable to attend in person, many workshops are available online via Zoom.

Composting Workshop

May 4, 2024, at 8:30 a.m.

Learn how to put your everyday food waste and organic materials to work for you. Hillsborough County residents will receive a compost bin, compost bucket, and thermometer after attending the workshop. (There is a limit of one per household and the representative of the household must be an adult.) The cost is $10 per workshop/per household.

Microirrigation Workshop

May 4, 2024, at 9:45 a.m.

Learn how you can have healthy and attractive landscape beds while conserving water. This irrigation method not only conserves water but is not limited by current water restrictions as is traditional in-ground irrigation. Hillsborough County residents will receive a microirrigation kit after attending the workshop. (There is a limit of one kit per household and the representative of the household must be an adult.) The cost is $10 per workshop/per household.

Rainwater Harvesting Workshop

May 4, 2024, at 11 a.m.

Learn how to collect rainwater for use in ornamental plant irrigation while reducing erosion and stormwater runoff, and the use of non-potable water for irrigation. Hillsborough County residents will receive a 44-55-gallon, plastic, food-grade barrel after attending the workshop. (There is a limit of one per household, and the representative of the household must be an adult.) The cost is $10 per workshop/per household.

If you are unable to make the May 4 workshops, consider attending in the summer or fall. The events above are scheduled for the first Saturday of each month through Nov. 2, 2024. The workshops are held at UF/IFAS Extension, Hillsborough County, located at 5339 County Rd. 579, Seffner, FL 33584.

Hillsborough County Extension Service is responsible for extending and implementing research-based information to the people of Hillsborough County. Extension provides education and information to county residents and businesses through workshops, publications, and mass media. The department partners with the University of Florida (UF) and the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS).
