Commissioners honor County's Business Enterprise Program and numerous organizations who support black-owned businesses
The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners presented a proclamation during its Aug. 7 meeting declaring August as Black Business Month. Brian Butler, president & CEO of Vistra Communications, and Eileen Rodriguez from the Minority Enterprise Development Corporation of Tampa Bay accepted the recognition.
Approximately 10% of all U.S. businesses and 30% of all minority-owned U.S. businesses are Black-owned and serve industries including construction, defense and security, engineering, financial services, healthcare, hospitality, information technology, and professional services. Black Business Month shows support for and celebrates the contribution of Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs who provide a significant number of goods and services to the economy and jobs for residents.
After accepting the recognition, Butler thanked the Board and said that Black-owned businesses play an important role in the growth of Hillsborough County.
"We are part of the fabric of this community," he said. "We are involved, engaged, and we give back to the community. But just remember: we are open for business year round."
