During the Aug. 7, 2024, Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting:
The Board declared August 2024 as Black Business Month. Approximately 10% of all U.S. businesses and 30% of all minority-owned U.S. businesses are Black-owned. The County’s Minority/Women-owned Business Enterprise Program along with its community partners strongly support these businesses and their economic impact.
Commissioners awarded a one-year funding agreement with Mental Health Care, Inc. for a short-term residential treatment program for individuals who are deemed incompetent to proceed to trial who can regain or restore their competency.
The Board also approved an agreement with Northside Behavioral Health Center, Inc. to provide services for adults diagnosed with severe, chronic, and persistent mental illness.
Commissioners approved the American Rescue Plan Act (ARP) agreement with Tampa General Hospital for the new patient tower for the Flexible Global Emerging Disease Unit. Funding will include reimbursement up to $5 million of previously allocated ARP funds plus an additional amount up to $1 million based on a dollar-for-dollar match from the City of Tampa.
The Board approved several contracts for ambulance services issued to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Inc., St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, and HCA Florida Brandon Hospital, along with an air ambulance contract issued to Med-Trans Corporation providing services to 13 AdventHealth hospital facilities.
Commissioners approved the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office contract with Redspeed Florida, LLC for the Hillsborough County School Zone Speed Enforcement Program. The County has designated 29 school zones as having a heightened safety risk based on data and evidence collected by HCSO.
A majority of commissioners voted to file an appeal of the 13th Judicial Circuit judge’s decision to have the Board adopt a resolution to place the Hillsborough County School Board’s millage referendum on the Nov. 5, 2024, ballot.
In addition, a majority of the Board voted to work with outside legal council on the litigation.
