During the June 20, 2024, Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting:
The Board declared June 19, 2024, as Juneteenth National Freedom Day. Juneteenth commemorates the official end of slavery and the first day of freedom in America for all African Americans. This special day, which became a federal holiday in 2021 and a County holiday in 2022, also embraces the rich African American history, culture, strength, and achievement.
Commissioners approved using $1.44 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding for a cybersecurity project.
The project will enhance the security of the County's information systems and enhance compliance with state law that requires local governments to adopt cybersecurity standards safeguarding data, information technology, and information technology resources.
The Board approved the realignment of $8.34 million in American Rescue Plan funding for numerous previously approved County projects including stormwater drainage and water quality improvements in Progress Village, the County Jail Step-Down Facility Renovation project, and sidewalk improvements.
Commissioners authorized negotiations with Alliant Partners Development, LLC for the redevelopment of the site surrounding the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI). The development plan involves two phases, starting with negotiations and entering an interim development agreement. The second phase will involve entering a final agreement that defines the core development approach and costs, and will detail the County's role in the development process.
The Board authorized staff to advertise and solicit for alternative proposals for the land exchange of five County parcels located at the current Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Operations Center in Ybor City. The County has received an offer for the land exchange to move HCSO headquarters to an existing, larger facility in the Brandon area. Staff thinks this will save time and money, and allow for future HCSO growth needs over the next 30 to 50 years.
Staff will present a formal recommendation to the BOCC on the property exchange proposal at a future meeting.
Commissioners voted to consider a resolution to opt out of part of the "Live Local Act Property Tax Exemption" that gives tax breaks for developers designing projects that are intended for residents whose household income is 80 to 120% of the area median income. Commissioners will vote on the resolution July 17.
The next BOCC regular meeting is at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2024. You can watch the meeting live on YouTube on the Hillsborough County Meetings channel.
