During the May 1, 2024, Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting: 

The Board presented the 2024 Ellsworth G. Simmons Good Government Award to Dorthea Wynn Edgecomb. Edgecomb’s lifelong service on behalf of the children, families, and educators of Hillsborough County has left an immeasurable impact on the community. 

Commissioners declared May 1 as the Eighteenth Annual Delta Day in honor of the local chapters of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority. Members provide support to the residents of Hillsborough County through advocacy that affects social change while also supporting quality education by granting scholarships, producing new projects to stimulate current and future economic growth, and improving the holistic well-being of minority populations locally, nationally, and globally. 

The Board declared May 2024 as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month and recognized the valuable influences Asian, South Asian, and Pacific Islander Americans have made in all areas of life, including government, business, arts and sciences, medicine, education, and law enforcement. 

During the May 1 meeting, commissioners approved a bond issuance not to exceed $34 million by the Housing Finance Authority to finance the acquisition and rehabilitation of 175 multi-family rental housing units known as Tampa 47th Street Apartments. 

The Board approved a CareerSource Tampa Bay application for new Local Workforce Development Area designation for the period of July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2026. The designation is needed in order for the State to receive and distribute Federal adult, dislocated worker, and youth workforce development grant funds in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. 

Commissioners approved a resolution declaring fentanyl a local public health crisis and June 6 as Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day in Hillsborough County. The resolution will encourage continued efforts to educate people on the effects of fentanyl and explore ways to provide the community with available resources to combat this public health crisis.
