Learn more about heat-illness prevention and steps we take to keep participants safe in the heat.
The health and safety of everyone who uses Hillsborough County athletic facilities is a top priority, especially when it comes to heat-related illness. County staff, program partners, and field renters all complete required training and certifications designed to reduce the risks associated with Florida’s high heat and humidity.
Heat safety technology at synthetic turf fields
At sites with synthetic turf fields, the County goes a step further by using a specialized tool called a Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) reader. Unlike a standard thermometer, the WBGT takes multiple factors into account—such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle, and cloud cover to measure how hot it feels when you're active outdoors.
Based on the WBGT reading, the County and its partners may adjust scheduled activities by reducing intensity, increasing rest and water breaks, or even postponing or canceling programming when necessary. These precautions apply to all field users, regardless of which organization is hosting the activity.
Hillsborough County’s goal is to ensure that everyone, including players, coaches, and spectators alike, can enjoy facilities safely.
Safety guidelines to beat the heat
Below, you’ll find the recommended safety guidelines the County follows based on WBGT readings, in alignment with the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) standards.
