Ideal Candidate
The Hillsborough County Solid Waste Management Department is seeking an Environmental Specialist to support operations at the Southeast County Landfill, an active Class I municipal solid waste disposal facility.
This position is responsible for conducting waste screening and sorting activities to identify prohibited, unauthorized, or recyclable materials entering the landfill while ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations. Responsibilities include performing routine inspections, documenting findings, assisting with regulatory reporting, monitoring landfill operations for permit compliance, coordinating with landfill staff and contractors, and supporting environmental programs and special projects.
The Environmental Specialist will conduct field inspections, investigate and document environmental concerns, maintain accurate records, prepare reports, and assist with regulatory inspections and audits. The position also works closely with operations personnel to ensure waste is managed in accordance with Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) regulations, permit requirements, and County policies.
The ideal candidate is safety-focused, detail-oriented, and possesses strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills. Candidates should be comfortable working in an active landfill environment, interacting with customers, contractors, and regulatory agencies, and utilizing databases, spreadsheets, and word processing software to maintain records and prepare reports.
Experience with environmental compliance, solid waste operations, waste screening, or landfill operations is preferred. The ability to speak Spanish is preferred but not required.
Minimum qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a Natural Science; AND
- Two years of experience in environmental inspection, sampling, testing, or evaluation; OR
- An equivalent combination of education (not less that possession of a High School diploma/GED), training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above;AND
- Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.
