During the May 20, 2026, Board of County Commissioners meeting:
The Board declared May 2026 as Problem Solving Court Month. The Thirteenth Judicial Circuit offers a variety of Problem-Solving Courts to help meet the diverse needs of the community. Its success depends on the dedicated efforts of judges, prosecutors, treatment providers, case managers, law enforcement officers, mentors, and community partners who work to support participants on their path to recovery.
Commissioners also declared May 2026 as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month to recognize the valuable influences these residents have made in all areas of life, including government, business, arts and sciences, medicine, education, and law enforcement.
The Board declared May 17-23 as Emergency Medical Services Week. EMS is a vital public service, and access to quality emergency care dramatically improves the survival and recovery rate of those who experience sudden illness or injury.
A majority of commissioners approved a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding, or MOU, with the Tampa Bay Rays' entities, the City of Tampa, and the City of Tampa's Community Redevelopment Agency, or CRA. The approval authorizes County staff to pursue additional negotiations with the Rays on various definitive agreements that contractually define the terms of construction, funding, ownership, use, and long-term maintenance and repair of a new ballpark and related development and redevelopment activity on the Hillsborough College Dale Mabry Campus. Approval of the non-binding MOU does not change the County's current budget nor create binding future commitments.
The Board adopted a resolution to expand the geographic boundary of the County Seat beyond the limits of the City of Tampa to include all lands lying within the boundaries of Hillsborough County. The expansion will better reflect the modern distribution of County governmental facilities and services and facilitate the efficient administration of County government.
The Board approved up to $317,100 in funding to Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center, Inc., which does business as High Five Inc., for converting the septic systems at the facility to the County-owned central sewer system. High Five is a nonprofit, community-based organization that offers after-school, athletic, aquatic, and recreational programs to members of the community.
The Board adopted resolutions updating the qualifications to the Red Light Camera Ordinance and the School Zone Speed Enforcement Ordinance authorizing the appointment of attorneys who are members in good standing with The Florida Bar to serve as local hearing officers and to receive appropriate compensation.
Commissioners adopted a resolution revising Hillsborough County's Cremation, Dissection, and Burial-At-Sea Ordinance to broaden its scope beyond just fees for services related to cremation, dissection, and burial-at-sea by authorizing the BOCC to establish a schedule of fees for various department services.
The next BOCC regular meeting is at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2026. You can watch the meeting live on YouTube on the Hillsborough County Meetings channel.
