11th Annual Military Agriculture Tour connects service members with job opportunities
Active-duty military, veterans, and their spouses got a firsthand look at the future of farming in Hillsborough County during the 11th Annual Military Agriculture Tour. The immersive experience aims to connect participants with careers in one of the region's most vital industries. Event organizers say similarities in military service and the agricultural industry are what make the program effective. Both fields value a strong work ethic, problem-solving ability, and the skills to navigate tough conditions.
Jeremy Sutliff, an Army veteran deployed to Afghanistan in 2006, is one of the many participants who found a job in the agriculture industry after completing the program. Sutliff says his story is a testament to how the initiative can help service members return to the civilian workforce.
"I loved the program because this is what I like doing," said Sutliff. "I like working in the field as part of a crew. It brings back memories of serving."
Hosted by UF/IFAS Extension in Hillsborough County, participants spent the day touring a diverse mix of agricultural sites across the county. They engaged directly with industry professionals, explored cutting-edge technology, and learned how agriculture blends sustainability with science. Event organizers say not only does the program help the county's agricultural industry but also provides a pathway for service members and veterans to successfully transition to civilian life. Sutliff says the program creates a community for veterans.
"The program makes me feel like I'm not the only one into doing something like this," he said. "There are a lot of the people here, and you make friends with them. If they're military, you naturally have that camaraderie."
