Hillsborough County, Fla. (July 29, 2025) - As record-breaking heat continues to grip Tampa Bay, the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center is asking for the community's help to protect dogs that are struggling in the extreme temperatures.
The pet shelter is already over capacity with dogs, many of which are especially vulnerable to the heat, and is urgently seeking residents who can provide relief - either by adopting, fostering, or taking one out for the day through the Adventure Tails program.
Hillsborough County is under an extreme heat warning today and has been under heat advisories for much of the last two weeks. Staff are doing everything they can to keep the dogs cool, including using large fans, setting up splash pads, handing out frozen treats, and hosing down kennels so dogs can lay on the cool floor. But with temperatures soaring and limited space, PRC needs help.
Here's how you can make a difference:
- Foster or temporarily house a dog. If you have space in your home, PRC is looking for short-term fosters to give dogs a break from the heat. Residents can apply online to foster.
- Take a dog on a day trip. Through the Adventure Tails program, you can pick up a pup for the day. Whether it's a visit to a pet-friendly business or just lounging in air conditioning, it gives dogs a much-needed break.
- Make frozen treats. Donations of frozen broth cubes or chilled treat bowls are welcome and appreciated. These help dogs stay cool and comfortable and can be dropped off at the Pet Resource Center (440 N. Falkenburg Rd., Tampa, FL 33619) during business hours. Other helpful items are yogurt, whipped cream, towels (to freeze), cooling bandanas, and blankets (to wet and freeze). The shelter does NOT need more pools, fans, and ice.
- Adopt. As always, adopting a pet into a loving, permanent home will make a life-changing difference for a pet in need.
- Donate and share. Not ready to adopt? You can still make an impact by spreading the word and donating. PRC's Amazon wish list makes it easy to send much-needed supplies directly to the shelter.
