Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative provides free digital education for vulnerable communities
Hillsborough County, Fla. (Jan. 28, 2025) - Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative is teaching older residents and Spanish speakers how to safely and effectively use mobile devices and computers during free digital literacy workshops starting in February.
Age and language continue to be the two major barriers to achieving digital literacy, a vital skill that has become necessary to live, work, and stay connected. While approximately 30% of Hillsborough County is 55 years old or older and 21% are Spanish speakers, the library is helping bridge the gap between these two groups and technology.
The digital literacy workshops offer training on three different topics, including mobile device basics for iOS, mobile device basics for Android, and cybersecurity. The workshops start on Feb. 4 and run through April 23.
While the program is catered toward older residents and Spanish speakers, residents of all ages and backgrounds are welcome to attend any or all of the classes in no particular order at three library branches, including Town N' Country Regional Public Library, Lutz Branch Library, and SouthShore Regional Library. The workshops will utilize the DigitalLearn.org training materials. Each class will feature a drawing for a free Chromebook.
Older adults may face difficulties with technology due to a lack of training or experience, while language barriers can impact a person's ability to seek employment or economic security. The ability to use a computer or smartphone allows people to stay connected with family and friends, maintain their independence, access information easily, and manage their finances.
Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative is among more than 100 public libraries nationwide selected by the Public Library Association to boost digital literacy using DigitalLearn.org. The digital literacy workshops are funded by the Friends of the Library of Tampa-Hillsborough County, Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library, and the Public Library Association in collaboration and with support from AT&T.
