Meet the writer behind the Brianna Justice series and hear her insights into the novel
Drop by the Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library on Aug. 6 to hear New York Times best-selling author Sherri Winston discuss her book, "President of the Whole Fifth Grade." The children's novel is a Sunshine State Young Readers Award selection and the first in the Brianna Justice book series.
As an author for grades three through seven, Winston has written several books including "Shark Teeth," winner of the Walter Dean Myers Award, and "Lotus Bloom and the Afro Revolution," which was longlisted for the National Book Award.
Winston was not always an author. Prior to her success writing middle-grade fiction, she was a longtime newspaper writer and columnist in South Florida at the Sun-Sentinel newspaper. She is a three-time nominee for a Pulitzer Prize for her lifestyle column in South Florida.
The first 50 children in attendance will receive a free book by Winston. (Children must be present to receive the free book.) This event is free and recommended for all ages.
An Evening with Sherri Winston begins at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 6 at the Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library, 2902 W. Bearss Ave., Tampa, FL 33618.
'President of the Whole Fifth Grade'
In this fun middle-grade novel, the story of Brianna Justice and her ambitions come to life in an exciting and fast-paced tale. Brianna may only be an elementary student in Michigan, but she has big dreams to follow in her chef hero's footsteps. To do so, Brianna must first become president of her class. When a new student, Jasmine Moon, also runs for president, Brianna must kick up the competition to win the election. Winston uses humor and heart to tell the story of elementary school politics and the challenges of navigating a fair election.
