Commissioners recognize Moffitt Cancer Center's efforts to raise awareness of early detection cancer screenings
During its Nov. 13 meeting, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners declared November 2024 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in Hillsborough County. Dr. Eric Toloza from the Thoracic Oncology Department at Moffitt Cancer Center accepted the proclamation.
According to the Lung Cancer Foundation of America, early detection screenings, such as spiral computed tomography, have been shown to reduce lung cancer deaths by 16% to 20%. Because of these findings, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force now recommends annual computed tomography screenings for people who meet specific criteria. Moffitt Cancer Center is instrumental in spreading the word about the importance of early detection screenings using computed tomography.
After thanking the Board for the recognition, Toloza said that early detection methods are vital to lung cancer prevention and that Hillsborough County has been instrumental in raising awareness throughout the community.
"The [Board of County Commissioners'] support in promoting lung cancer screening will directly help us reach more of our community members at risk, ensuring they have access to lung cancer screening care that they need," he said. "By working together, we can make a significant impact in the fight against lung cancer and improve health outcomes for our residents."
