Hillsborough County, Fla. (Nov. 6, 2024) - Groundbreaking ceremonies will be held Thursday, Nov. 7, for a pair of projects aimed at increasing the supply of affordable housing for seniors and families.

At 10 a.m., Hillsborough County and the Corporation to Develop Communities of Tampa on Thursday will celebrate the beginning of work on 18 new homes for low-income families.

The homes on Knoll Pine Way near Sligh Avenue and 56th St. North will each have three bedrooms and two baths. Hillsborough County provided $2.4 million in state and local funds toward the project.

The 18 homes will be sold at below-market rate to first-time homebuyers making 80 percent or less of Area Median Income. At least two of the homes will be reserved for those with special needs.

Thursday's groundbreaking ceremony will be at 10 a.m. at 5055 Knoll Pine Way, Tampa, FL 33617.

At 1:30 p.m., Hillsborough County, the Tampa Housing Authority, Mt. Zion AME Church of Riverview, and community partners will break ground on an apartment complex that will rent exclusively to lower-income seniors.

Zion Village Apartments will sit on about 2 acres owned by the nearby Mt. Zion AME Church of Riverview. The church's pastor says the idea for using the property for affordable housing grew after church members noticed increasing number of homeless seniors in the area.

All 75 units at Zion Village Apartments in Riverview will be leased at below-market rates to seniors making 70 percent or less of Area Median Income. Zion Village Apartments will feature 650-square-foot, one-bedroom apartments with energy-efficient appliances, washer and dryer, and granite countertops. The complex will include a fitness century, library, movie room, clubroom, and outdoor pavilion.

Hillsborough County contributed $6.8 million to the project, which has an overall budget of about $33.5 million. The project involves a partnership between the Tampa Housing Authority, Smith & Henzy Affordable Group, Mt. Zion AME Church of Riverview, and Adonai's Second Chances, Inc.

Thursday's groundbreaking ceremony for Zion Village Apartments will be at 1:30 p.m. at 5920 Robert Tolle Drive, Riverview, FL 33578.
