Plant City pair celebrates 59 years together at Hillsborough County's Adult Day Care Center
A heartwarming celebration recently took place at Hillsborough County's Adult Day Care Center in Plant City as members Esther and Wayne Devilbiss marked their 59th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows. Surrounded by family, friends, and staff, the couple shared laughs, memories, and a heartfelt ceremony that brought smiles and a few happy tears to everyone in attendance.
A whirlwind romance
The couple's story - rooted in serendipity and sustained by mutual respect - has become an inspiration to all who know them. Their journey began in 1966 when Esther traveled from Florida to Maryland to visit her brother's girlfriend while he was deployed in Vietnam. During her visit, Esther took a job at the Top Hat diner. That's where Wayne walked in for a meal and, unexpectedly, met the woman who would become his wife just six months later.
They hit it off instantly. "I just couldn't wait," Wayne said with a smile, reflecting on their whirlwind romance and June wedding that same year.
What's their secret?
As for the secret to their enduring love, the couple credits patience, communication, and knowing when to compromise. "If you have a disagreement, leave it in the room and walk away. Then go back and talk it through when you aren't angry," Esther said. Wayne joked that letting Esther get her way doesn't hurt either - and sometimes, they simply agree to disagree.
Still in love after all these years
Now retired and still very much in love, Mr. and Mrs. Devilbiss spend their days together enjoying the programs and companionship at the Plant City Adult Day Care Center. Staff and fellow members say the couple brings joy wherever they go. "They light up the room when they come in," said one member. Wayne added, "This is one of the best places I've ever been. People go out of their way to help."
