Neighborhood organizations fought crime, cleaned up, and updated their amenities

Held annually to highlight neighborhood organizations that have fostered healthy, safe, and engaged neighborhoods through exceptional programs, projects, and events, this year's Neighborhood Awards winners have gone above and beyond for their communities.

These award winners are all semifinalists for the Hillsborough County 2024 Neighborhood of the Year Award (NOTY). The NOTY Award winner will be announced in the coming weeks.

A cleaner, greener community

The Progress Village Civic Council leveraged the power of connection through local partnerships to host an inclusive and successful neighborhood clean-up, collecting and disposing of 13 tons of debris and unwanted household items.

Registration for curbside pickup ensured that seniors and residents with disabilities had an opportunity to participate. This community-wide effort beautified the neighborhood while fostering a strong sense of collaboration and care among the residents.

Crushing crime and connecting teens

When East Lake Park Homeowners Civic Club saw a need for increased safety measures, they combined forces with residents and community partners and businesses to meet regularly and develop a strategy. Utilizing the neighborhood Facebook group page, residents could easily report suspicious activity, loose dogs, safety suggestions, and community welfare.

As an added benefit, the Facebook page also connected East Lake teens with employment opportunities such as gutter cleaning, mowing, and dog walking.

Teens were then given training on topics such as determining expected payment, conditions for work, and equipment needed.

Harnessing the power of social media, engagement and communications among the East Lake community has soared and neighborhood youth have a focus on employment and positive decisions.

Renovating amenities to bring neighbors together

With a community clubhouse, recreational pool, shuffleboard, and grilling area, Sheldon West Condominium Owner's Association, Inc. offers its residents a unique living experience.

With the goal of enhancing the community's offerings, Sheldon West used Neighborhood Mini-Grant funds to install new LED safety lighting in the clubhouse and purchase new pool furniture.

This active 55+ community is relishing the clubhouse renovations, which have sparked an increase in social activities, including day-time crafting and wellness groups, contributing to residents' overall well-being and connectedness.
