During the July 17, 2024, Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting:
The Board declared July 26 as Americans with Disabilities Act 34th Anniversary Awareness Day.
The ADA was passed to ensure people with disabilities have the same civil rights and opportunities as those who don’t and prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life.
Commissioners held a public hearing and discussed the list of proposed projects to be funded if the half-cent Community Investment Tax (CIT) is passed for the period of Dec. 1, 2026, through Dec. 31, 2041.
If the CIT is passed, it would generate an estimated revenue of $3.76 billion dollars over 15 years. The Hillsborough County School Board would receive 5% and the rest would be distributed to the BOCC and the cities of Tampa, Temple Terrace, and Plant City.
Projects that would be funded by the CIT include:
- Transportation
- Public works
- Public safety
- Facilities
- Utilities
Residents will vote on the proposed CIT on the Nov. 5 ballot.
A majority of commissioners voted to place the Hillsborough County School Board’s referendum to levy additional ad valorem taxes for operating expenses on the 2026 ballot.
The Board voted to opt out of part of the "Live Local Act Property Tax Exemption" that gives tax breaks for developers designing projects that are intended for residents whose household income is 80 to 120% of the area median income.
The County Administrator delivered the fiscal year 2025 recommended budget. The $10.1 billion budget would continue to support County operations including the Sheriff’s Office and Health Care Services and would also invest in public safety improvements, infrastructure, and water and sewer projects.
Commissioners will discuss the recommended budget at a public hearing on July 31 and a final vote will be held on Sept. 19.
The Board approved a one-time funding award of $10,000 to Bay Chapel, Inc. in New Tampa for the purchase of equipment related to their food bank services.
The next BOCC regular meeting is at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2024. You can watch the meeting live on YouTube on the Hillsborough County Meetings channel.
