Celebrate the new school year and explore resources that boost academic success, confidence, and healthy habits

The first day of school is just around the corner, and as students across the region prepare to head back to the classroom on Aug. 10, Hillsborough County is helping families start the school year strong. From free community events and after-school care to youth sports and library resources, the County offers programs that support students' academic success, encourage healthy lifestyles, and provide safe, enriching opportunities beyond the school day.

Celebrate the new school year

Families are invited to kick off the school year with two free "Back 2 School Bash" celebrations hosted by Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation.

Thursday, Aug. 6 - Back 2 School Bash at Alexander Park & Recreation Center

Friday, Aug. 7 - Back 2 School Bash at Balm Park & Recreation Center

The events will feature fun activities for children and families while celebrating the start of a new school year and connecting residents with community resources.

After-school care

For working parents and caregivers, Hillsborough County's after-school programs provide a safe, supervised environment where students can continue learning, make friends, and stay active after classes end. Available at 18 recreation centers across the county, the programs serve students in kindergarten through eighth grade and include activities such as:

  • Sports and recreation games
  • Arts and crafts
  • Educational enrichment
  • Social activities and team building

Adaptive after-school programs are also available at select locations, providing inclusive opportunities designed to meet the needs of children with special needs.

Library resources that support student success

The Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative (HCPLC) offers a wide range of free resources to help students succeed both in and out of the classroom.

Students can access:

Free online tutoring through Brainfuse, which provides live homework help, study tools, and academic support.

HAAL Pass (Hillsborough All Access Libraries Pass), which gives students access to library materials and digital resources using their student identification number

ABCmouse, an early learning platform available through the library that helps young children build foundational reading, math, science, and art skills.

Keep kids active this fall

Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation offers a variety of youth programs that help students stay active and develop new skills throughout the fall season. New this year, the County is introducing Girls Flag Football, expanding opportunities for young athletes to participate in organized sports.

Youth programs include:

Participants learn the fundamentals of each sport while developing teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership skills in a fun, supportive environment led by experienced coaches. With a variety of sports and leagues to choose from, there's something for every young athlete.
