Free tools and expert guidance can help unlock the stories behind local properties

For many residents, a home is more than just a place to live; it's a piece of history. Unlocking that history is easier than ever thanks to the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative. Through various tools, databases, and expert guidance, Hillsborough County is helping residents uncover the stories behind their properties.

Hillsborough's History of a House research tools can help homeowners trace the past of their property, from previous owners to neighborhood developments, and even historic photographs.

The effort is thanks to the library's extensive genealogy collection and local history resources, which are available to the public for free both online and in person.

At the center of that work is the Florida History & Genealogy Library at the John F. Germany Public Library in downtown Tampa. Located on the fourth floor, residents can find census data, property-related records, city directories, newspapers, and maps that can help piece together a home's timeline.

The Sanborn Map Company was the primary American publisher of fire insurance maps for nearly 100 years. The detailed maps provide a wealth of information, such as building outline, size, and shape.

Residents can also search through historic newspapers, including full-text articles from The Tampa Tribune dating back to the 1800s. Explore the Burgert Brothers Photographic Collection, an archive of more than 20,000 images documenting Hillsborough County's growth from the late 1800s through the mid-20th century.
