Historian Marla R. Miller to explore the real story of the Revolutionary War icon during free Nov. 9 event
Hillsborough County, Fla. (Nov. 6, 2026) - Did Betsy Ross really create the first American flag? Who was the woman behind the stars and stripes? And how much of her legendary story is fact versus fiction? The Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library invites residents to explore the woman behind one of America's most enduring legends during a special afternoon with acclaimed historian and author Marla R. Miller.
Miller will discuss her book, "Betsy Ross and the Making of America," which goes beyond the familiar story of the first American flag to uncover the remarkable life of one of the nation's most recognizable Revolutionary War figures.
A professor of history at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Miller specializes in uncovering the often-overlooked stories of women in early American history. Her research sheds new light on Ross's life, her work as a skilled artisan, and the important roles women played in shaping early America.
Following the discussion, attendees will have an opportunity to meet Miller and have their books signed. Free copies of "Betsy Ross and the Making of America" will be available while supplies last. Books will not be available for purchase at the event. Event capacity is limited. If you are unable to attend, watch-party locations are available.
The event is free and funded by the Friends of the Library of Tampa-Hillsborough County, Inc. For more information on the event and watch parties, visit the event page.
