Hands-on demonstration lets kids and teens create action-packed characters with award-winning author Johnnie Christmas
Hillsborough County, Fla. (April 1, 2026) - Hillsborough County invites young artists and storytellers to learn directly from a nationally recognized graphic novelist during a free, hands-on workshop hosted by the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative.
New York Times bestselling author Johnnie Christmas will lead "Learn to Draw Characters in Motion" at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, at Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library, 2902 W. Bearss Ave., Tampa, FL 33618. The interactive session will guide participants step-by-step in creating dynamic, realistic characters in action. No experience is required. All materials are provided.
Christmas, author of the acclaimed middle-grade graphic novel "Swim Team," brings award-winning expertise to the program. The book earned a National Book Awards longlist spot, a Coretta Scott King Award Illustrator Honor, and multiple national nominations. A graduate of the Pratt Institute, his work is known for blending powerful storytelling with vibrant, engaging visuals designed to inspire young readers.
This family-friendly event is free and open to the public. Copies of "Swim Team" and "Gamerville" will be available, giving attendees the chance to connect with the artist behind the pages. The program is funded by the Friends of the Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library.
