A neurodivergent volunteer highlights how community members can make meaningful impacts for animals and themselves

Walk into the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center (PRC), and at any time, guests will be welcomed by dozens of cats and dogs available for adoption. Behind the animals awaiting their forever homes is a dedicated team working to provide the best shelter life possible. Alongside PRC staff, more than 200 active volunteers give their time to help wherever possible.

That includes Sandra and her brother John, who has an intellectual disability. John is a regular volunteer, contributing his time and effort alongside others. Sandra shares that participating together has been a meaningful way for John to connect with the community and be included.

"It creates a sense of empowerment for John," Sandra said. "It provides a sense of belonging. He has a job that he does; it's enriching."

Volunteers at PRC play a major role in caring for the animals and preparing them for adoption. Whether it's handing out treats or taking the dogs out to play, PRC staff say volunteers are crucial.

"Without volunteers, we can't do what we do here," one employee said. "Even if it's as simple as helping us do dishes and laundry, which is a never-ending cycle."

For Sandra, the dedicated PRC staff plays a big role in why she and her brother come back each week. Sandra hopes her brother's work inspires others with intellectual disabilities to volunteer.

"The staff is amazing. Everyone here is very nice and super helpful. Anytime they see John, they thank him for being here," Sandra said. "I'd love to have other parents realize how enriching this can be for people with disabilities, and how much volunteering helps the shelter."

Get involved at the PRC

Volunteers at the Pet Resource Center assist staff with a variety of tasks. From enrichment activities for cats to assisting with outdoor playtime for dogs, volunteers have a direct impact on the well-being of the animals. The PRC provides all the necessary training before getting started.

The PRC is always looking for foster volunteers, who play a significant role in the lives of homeless pets. From caring for orphaned kittens to nursing injured pets back to health, the foster program is both rewarding and educational. With the help of volunteers, fostered animals become more socialized with people and have better chances of finding their forever homes.

Foster for the day

The PRC also offers a program where volunteers can foster a dog for a day. As part of the Adventure Tails initiative, participants take a shelter dog out to provide a break from shelter life. Volunteers can observe and document how the animals interact in new environments.
