Commissioners recognize Moffitt Cancer Center's efforts to raise awareness of early detection cancer screenings
During its Nov. 5 meeting, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners declared November 2025 as Lung Cancer Screening Awareness Month in Hillsborough County. Moffitt Cancer Center thoracic surgeon Dr. Sam Freyaldenhoven accepted the proclamation.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women in the United States, claiming the lives of approximately 1,680 people each day, which nearly equals breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer combined. Moffitt Cancer Center serves as a leader in discovering ground-breaking methods to detect cancers early. The center's innovative outreach includes the Ferman Family Mobile Lung Cancer Screening Unit, which brings low-dose, computed tomography screenings, also known as CT screenings, directly to the public.
After thanking the Board for the recognition, Freyaldenhoven said that the proclamation honors cancer survivors, their families, and patients.
"It [also] honors the researchers and clinicians that are advancing this work," he said. "It also recognizes the community leaders that help getting attention to this nationwide."
The Board also presented a proclamation declaring Dec. 7, 2025, as Gamma Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha 85th Anniversary Day Celebration, honoring the hard work and accomplishments of the local sorority.
