The Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System has opened the Wimauma Public Library/Biblioteca Pública de Wimauma.

The building, located at 5714 North St., Wimauma, FL 33598, is small but carries a big punch with books in English and Spanish, additional resources and materials, and computers for adults and children. The library also has access to scan, print, and fax.

The Wimauma Public Library/Biblioteca Pública de Wimauma also has Launchpad tablets for children and WhaZoodles, a screen-free technology for children, as well as interactive children's books like Vox Books and WonderBooks.

Hillsborough County Library Services repurposed the 1,657-square-foot building, which was formerly a Hillsborough County Aging Services senior center. While the space is smaller than most Hillsborough County libraries, staff have created a comfortable space that is filled with just under 3,000 items. All the material provided at this library is new.

The Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System now has 30 public libraries throughout Hillsborough County, including in Temple Terrace and Plant City.

This is the first public library in Wimauma. The growth of the area drove the need for services that a public library can provide for free. South County's population has expanded rapidly, and the need to offer a more convenient library location for the residents of Wimauma was apparent. In fact, every library the County opens is driven by community generated requests and needs, staff said.

Since opening, a number of people have already visited the library and signed up for library cards.

The Wimauma Library, which has a bilingual staff, is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For information, visit HCPLC.org
