During the Oct. 15, 2025, Board of County Commissioners meeting:

The Board recognized the accomplishments of six outstanding students during the Board of County Commissioners’ Youth Excellence and Achievement Awards, also known as the YEA!  Awards. This is the 15th year of the program, which was created to recognize young people’s positive contributions in areas such as academics, community service, and the performing arts.

The awards were presented to middle and high school students in the categories of leadership, volunteer or community service, and success despite difficult odds.

Commissioners received a report on the Indoor Sports Facility project on the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) redevelopment site.

Staff reported that repurposing the County-owned site would save $15 million, and the total estimated cost for the project would $70.5 million.

A majority of funds have been identified in the County’s Community Investment Tax renewal.

The Board approved an interlocal agreement with the Tampa Sports Authority for design services. Commissioners said that the sports facility is a key component of the overall redevelopment of the County's 73-acre site and will drive overall visitation and economic growth.

Staff has a goal to open the facility by 2028 and will continue to provide updates as key milestones are reached.

Commissioners approved the George M. Steinbrenner Field Renovation Improvements Purchase Agreement with the New York Yankees Partnership for up to $17.95 million in facility improvements from the County’s Tourist Development Tax. Requested improvements include additional security, digital enhancements, parking lot repaving, seat and field improvements, lighting, and more.

The Board directed the County Administrator to establish an internal working group to conduct a comprehensive review of all existing Board policies and present recommendations for potential action by the Board.

Commissioners approved the County's sponsorship, in the amount of $93,750, for the "2026 Annual Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival & Music Fest" to be held at various locations throughout Hillsborough County from January through March 2026. Additionally, $60,000 was approved for the "2026 United Bikerz Jamboree" to be held May 22 through May 26 at Brandon Harley Davidson of Tampa Bay.

Funding is available in the FY 26 Adopted Budget in the Countywide Non-Profit Allocations.
