The UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough has been recognized by ArbNet for its curated collection of trees
The UF/IFAS Extension in Hillsborough County has earned an accreditation for its 1.5 acre arboretum. The educational landscape is designed to promote environmental stewardship and horticultural literacy.
Made up of fruit trees, trees native to Florida, and more regional tree species, the space provides a glimpse into the makeup of Hillsborough County's unique greenery. Extension's arboretum is the first in the county to earn accreditation.
The recognition is issued by ArbNet, the only accrediting organization of its kind, and requires five criteria for a level one accreditation.
To earn accreditation, an arboretum must have a strategic plan, a governance structure, a minimum of 25 species, a designated staff or volunteers, and a public element.
The UF/IFAS Extension in Hillsborough provides agricultural education to county residents. With the new accreditation, they can offer additional learning opportunities to better serve the community.
New visuals, such as tree tags and signage for visitors, will showcase their living collection and recognize the accomplishment of receiving a competitive accreditation.
The arboretum is located at 5339 County Rd. 579, Seffner, FL 33584 and is open to the public.
