Hispanic-owned businesses recognized for contributions to Hillsborough County
During the Sept. 17 Board of County Commissioners meeting, the Board presented a proclamation to Sandra Atiles-Tyrell, an entrepreneur and CEO, declaring September as Hispanic Heritage Month, in Hillsborough County. The Board emphasized the influential roles that Hispanic people and Hispanic-owned businesses play in Hillsborough County's culture and economy.
Since 1988, Hispanic Heritage Month has been recognized for 30 days across the nation, especially in Hillsborough County. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 65 million Hispanic Americans live in the United States, making them the nation's largest minority group, with approximately 6 million residing in Florida and more than 420,000 in Hillsborough County, representing over 25 percent of the county's population.
After accepting the recognition, Atiles-Tyrell thanked the Board and said that Hispanic Heritage Month will always hold a special place in her heart.
"It is a time to celebrate not only the richness of our culture, the traditions, the language, the music, the food, but also the resilience, the determination, and contributions of Hispanic people in every part of society," she said.
