How you can help Hillsborough County's Pet Resource Center

As record-breaking heat continues to grip Tampa Bay, the Pet Resource Center (PRC) is asking for the community's help to protect dogs that are struggling in the extreme temperatures.

With PRC being over capacity for dogs, many of which are especially vulnerable to the heat, PRC is urgently seeking residents who can provide relief - either by adopting, fostering, or taking one out for the day through the Adventure Tails program.

Staff are doing everything they can to keep the dogs cool, including using large fans, setting up splash pads, handing out frozen treats, and hosing down kennels so dogs can lay on the cool floor. But with temperatures soaring and limited space, PRC needs help.

Here's how you can make a difference:

  • Foster or temporarily house a dog. If you have space in your home, PRC is looking for short-term fosters to give dogs a break from the heat.
  • Take a dog on a day trip. Through the Adventure Tails program, you can pick up a pup for the day. Whether it's a visit to a pet-friendly business or just lounging in air conditioning, it gives dogs a much-needed break.
  • Make frozen treats. Donations of frozen broth cubes or chilled treat bowls are welcome and appreciated. These help dogs stay cool and comfortable and can be dropped off at the Pet Resource Center (440 N. Falkenburg Rd., Tampa, FL 33619) during business hours.
  • Adopt. As always, adopting a dog or cat into a loving, permanent home will make a life-changing difference for a pet in need.
  • Donate and share. Not ready to adopt? You can still make an impact by spreading the word and donating. PRC's Amazon wish list makes it easy to send much-needed supplies directly to the shelter.
