Hillsborough County, Fla. (July 7, 2025) - Hillsborough is proposing a land acquisition in the Ruskin area for a Sewer System Vacuum Lift Station. This project is part of the Ruskin and Wimauma Low Pressure Septic-to-Sewer Conversion Program to improve service in the community. For more information, visit the Septic-to-Sewer & LPSS Conversion Projects page.
The proposed vacuum lift station will serve an area bounded by the Little Manatee River on the west, the Ruskin Inlet/March Branch on the north and a CSX railway line on the south and east.
This project is part of a larger countywide program to protect groundwater and improve the quality of the region's natural systems in areas around Tampa Bay by eliminating septic tanks and replacing low-pressure-sewer systems when applicable. This proactive approach will lead to:
- Improved Community Health: By ensuring cleaner water and reducing environmental pollutants, fostering a healthier population and a more vibrant ecosystem.
- Increased Property Values: Eliminating contamination sources and promoting eco-friendly waste management solutions will boost property values and attract potential buyers and investors to the area.
- Future-Ready Infrastructure: This essential infrastructure upgrade not only addresses current needs but also prepares the community for future environmental challenges by building resilience.
The proposed vacuum lift station site is planned to be on two adjacent vacant lots at the corner of 4th Avenue SW and 7th Street SW in Ruskin (708 Elkhorn Rd., Sun City Center, FL 33573), which would need to be purchased by the County.
The site's benefits include:
- Existing water and electricity infrastructure nearby to support the proposed lift station.
- Sufficient space to provide vegetative buffering and screening for neighboring properties.
Public Engagement Opportunity
Residents can learn about the land acquisition and the project and provide feedback virtually on the Hillsborough County Education & Engagement Hub until July 21.
