In any extreme weather change, knowing how to prepare and protect what matters most can make all the difference.

As the nighttime temperatures hover in the high 30s and low 40s, Hillsborough County is committed to ensuring the safety of residents, pets, and plants during this seasonal cold snap. In any extreme weather change, knowing how to prepare and protect what matters most can make all the difference.

The County's Cold Weather Shelter partners open their doors on nights when the National Weather Service forecasts temperatures to dip to or below 40 degrees including wind chill between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Opening the shelters ensures that vulnerable populations have a refuge from the cold.

To find out if shelters are open, residents can visit the Hillsborough County Cold Weather Shelters webpage or call the County's Customer Service Center at (813) 272-5900.

Here are essential tips to help you stay safe and safeguard your loved ones and surroundings.

Protecting Yourself

  • Keep an eye on weather as updates are shared through local media outlets and the County's social media channels.
  • Wear layers and ensure you're protected from the cold or unexpected rain. Don't forget hats and gloves when temperatures drop.

Protecting Your Pets

  • Bring pets indoors when temperatures drop. If that's not possible, provide a warm, dry shelter with plenty of blankets.
  • Ensure your pets have access to clean, unfrozen water during cold spells.
  • Watch out for signs of hypothermia or frostbite in pets, such as shivering or pale skin. Consult a veterinarian immediately if you suspect an issue.
  • Before starting a vehicle, check underneath and around it for outdoor cats seeking warmth in the engine area. Banging on the hood and honking the horn can help encourage them to move, saving a furry friend!

Protecting Your Plants

  • Use breathable fabric like frost blankets or sheets to cover sensitive plants overnight during cold snaps. Remove covers during the day to let plants breathe and get sunlight.
  • Water plants before a cold night to help insulate roots. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.
  • Bring potted plants indoors or into a garage or shed for added protection.
