SouthShore Charter Academy's Anchored4Life members assemble nearly 50 cooling kits to help venerable residents stay cool during a heat wave

Hillsborough County's Homeless & Community Services staff recently received a gift from SouthShore Charter Academy students that will help vulnerable residents beat the Florida heat and stay cool.

Members of the school's Anchored4Life (A4L) program made nearly 50 cooling kits that contain bottled water, cooling towels, sunscreen, electrolyte drink mixes, and hygiene essentials.

"Our students were passionate about doing something that would directly impact people's health and well-being," said Jorie Allen, Anchored4Life Club Advisor at SouthShore. "This project gave them the opportunity to lead with compassion, problem-solve as a team, and remind others that they are seen and cared for."

Homeless & Community Services will now distribute the cooling kits to partnering agencies that assist with the County's most vulnerable population. Last year, more than 600 kits were provided to residents.

Anchored4Life is a national peer-to-peer leadership program designed to build resilience, empathy, and character in young people while equipping them to support peers through life's challenges. At SouthShore Charter Academy, A4L members are actively engaged in giving back through meaningful community outreach. The project was funded through a student-led fundraiser held in honor of the Month of the Military Child.

If you would like to assist with providing cooling kits for the County's most vulnerable population, please email or call Dwight Wilson at wilsondd@hcfl.gov or 813-422-1444.
