Provides key direction of divisional activities to accomplish Solid Waste Sustainability & Disposal Operations; includes strategic planning to provide efficient and cost competitive services, management of personnel and performance standards and measures; management of budget and inventories, division policies and procedures; authorization of purchases and payments, and oversight of unit facilities and solid waste infrastructure. The position is also responsible to manage and analyze data regarding solid waste tonnage, performs site visits to coordinate planned services and projects, reviews staff reports and collaborates to ensure service delivery. Prepares and submits correspondence, assigned projects and studies, analytical and statistical reports, reviews, cost analyses, staff and routine reports. Attends public meetings; fosters good rapport and maintains a productive level of communication. Responds to emergency events and times of crisis to provide public safety.

$113,505 - $195,499

Ideal candidate

Hillsborough County is seeking a Solid Waste Sustainability & Disposal Division Director to perform responsible senior-level managerial and advanced professional activities involved in directing multiple functions of the County Solid Waste System encompassing Solid Waste Management's Southeast County Landfill Facility, Waste-to-Energy Facility, and Recycling and Special Waste Programs. The ideal candidate must have the ability to plan and implement annual goals, objectives, and strategies for the Division to ensure efficient organization and completion of work. Ideal candidate must have experience in managing employee production, facility conditions, heavy equipment and contractors to ensure reliability of the solid waste systems. Ideal candidate must have ability to manage a large budget. Ideal candidate must have integral knowledge of FDEP (Florida Department of Environment Protection) policies and procedures and the ability to communicate effectively during emergency conditions, using facts to support decisions and recommendations.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree with additional course work in Business Administration, Engineering, Solid Waste Management, or Environmental management.; AND
  • Minimum 8 years progressive experience in solid waste management field with emphasis on operations.; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted below. (For education and experience only, does not include legally required Licenses or Certifications.)
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License
