Hillsborough County, Fla. (Sept. 5, 2024) - Public Works crews worked around the clock Wednesday night to mitigate damage from an unprecedented rainfall event that impacted the Town 'N Country neighborhood in western Hillsborough County.
The area received 3.89 inches of rain in less than an hour on Wednesday night after getting 3.4 inches the night before. This volume of rain overwhelmed canals in Town 'N Country, and it took pump operators working overnight moving water out of the canals to prevent a major flooding event in the area.
County stormwater teams worked on-site at 15 stormwater pumps to ensure the pumps continued working so that the streets were clear by 9 a.m. Thursday.
County staff has been working diligently to continue to lower floodwaters as quickly as possible during the day Thursday. All pumps throughout the area will continue operation until the water reaches a level where County teams can safely evaluate storm drains and clear any obstructions.
Residents should take the following precautions around floodwaters:
- Never drive through flooded roadways.
- Obey emergency road signs and barriers if there is flooding in your area.
