Board honors local congregation for its dedication to County's newest holiday
During its June 20 meeting, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners presented a proclamation recognizing June 19 as Juneteenth National Freedom Day. Accepting the proclamation was Pastor Alan Harris of Beulah Baptist Institutional Church.
Juneteenth represents the first day celebrating freedom in America for African Americans, while also embracing African American history, culture, strength, and achievement. On July 14, 2021, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners unanimously passed a motion making Juneteenth a County holiday starting in 2022, allowing all County employees to celebrate the occasion.
After accepting the proclamation, Harris thanked the Board for honoring Juneteenth and his parish, and said that he is grateful to serve as the spiritual leader at the Beulah Baptist Institutional Church.
"One of the blessings of serving at such a great church is having such great individuals who serve in various capacities," he said.
