The mural is a significant step towards enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the new safety measures along the 78th Street Corridor
Hillsborough County Public Works, along with the Greater Palm River Point Community Development Corporation (CDC), recently completed a median mural on 78th Street within a pedestrian refuge that is designed to help protect pedestrians crossing the multilane road.
The stunning, 1,900-square-footmural is in front of Clair Mel Elementary School. The mural is a significant step in enhancing the aesthetic appeal of safety measures being implemented along the 78th Street corridor, extending from Causeway Boulevard to Palm River Road.
Tony Altman, executive director of the Greater Palm River Point CDC, led a team of dedicated volunteers who were instrumental in the artistic vision and the painting of the mural, which resulted in a remarkable addition to the neighborhood.
Artists Terry Klaaren and Anita Long guided the endeavor. The collaboration between the artists and volunteers ensured a seamless process from inception to completion. The vibrant colors of the mural provide a placemaking element and beautification to the safety improvements and creates a sense of pride and identity within the Palm River Community. Clair Mel Elementary crossing guards welcome the addition of the mural because of the safety improvements and the further enhancement to the corridor's appeal and functionality.
The completion of the 78th Street Corridor project showcases the power of community collaboration and the potential of public art as a tool to use hand-in-hand with safety improvements along County corridors.
