During the April 3, 2024, Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting:
The Board declared April 2024 as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Commissioners, the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County, and other community partners are dedicated to supporting programs and advocacy efforts that help prevent child abuse and neglect, promote awareness of healthy child development, encourage positive parenting practices, and provide support to families in need.
Commissioners received a report on a proposed Carbon Capture Utilization and Sequestration pilot project. The project will divert carbon dioxide from the County’s Resource Recovery Facility exhaust stack and convert it to calcium carbonate. The pilot project provides an opportunity for reduction of carbon emissions while also generating revenue from the sale of carbon credits. The board will vote on a proposed agreement at its April 17 meeting.
The Board accepted the Communications & Digital Media - Website Content Management audit report performed by the County Internal Auditor's Office for the new HCFL.gov website.
The board received a draft ordinance to place a renewal of the existing half-percent Community Investment Tax (CIT) on the November 2024 ballot.
Since 1996, the CIT has been shared with municipalities and Hillsborough County Public Schools to finance infrastructure, public safety, school construction, a community stadium, transportation and stormwater improvements, and other public facilities.
The drafted ordinance would implement the CIT for 15 years and allocate 5% of the tax to Hillsborough County schools for infrastructure. The County and cities would submit a list of projects for approval to be paid for by CIT funds.
Commissioners will hold a public hearing and vote on the ordinance on April 17.
The next BOCC regular meeting is at 9 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2024. You can watch the meeting live on YouTube on the Hillsborough County Meetings channel.
