Self-care isn't selfish! In fact, it's essential.

Instead of the traditional chocolates or roses, why not treat yourself to some essential self-care this month?

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NAMI), self-care can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and increase your energy. Even small acts of self-care in your daily life can have a big impact.

Here are some easy ways to practice self-care in your home or community:

  • Get regular exercise. According to NAMI, just 30 minutes of walking every day can help boost your mood and improve your health. Head out to one of the many Hillsborough County parks and nature preserves and enjoy the beautiful nature in your own backyard.

  • Eat healthy and stay hydrated. A balanced diet and plenty of water can improve your energy and focus throughout the day.

  • Prioritize sleep. Stick to a schedule, and make sure you're getting enough.

  • Try a relaxing activity. Hillsborough County libraries have everything you need to wind down from a stressful day. Get lost in a good book, learn how to play an instrument, or take a Tai-Chi Yoga and Meditation class! Find a list of HCPLC events.

  • Set goals. Decide what must get done now and what can wait. Try to be mindful of what you have accomplished at the end of the day, not what you have been unable to do.

  • Ask for help. It's OK not to be OK. Reach out to friends or family members who can provide support. There are plenty of local and national mental health resources available 24/7, 365.

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline provides prevention and crisis resources and confidential support to people in distress 24/7 and free or charge.

The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay has offered services to the Tampa Bay community for more than 50 years to ensure no one faces a crisis alone.

Tampa Bay Thrives is a local nonprofit that helps people better address mental health and substance abuse issues by focusing on improved navigation resources to help people find appropriate care, access to behavioral health counseling, and removing the stigma of seeking treatment for mental health- related issues.
