Free clinic on Oct. 11 will help pet owners protect their furry friends and meet Florida rabies requirements

Hillsborough County is making it easier for local pet owners to keep their dogs and cats protected with a free vaccination clinic this weekend. The annual clinic on Sunday, Oct. 11, will offer free rabies vaccinations and microchips. For participants that live in Hillsborough County, their pets will also receive tags and registration. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or until supplies run out, at the Hillsborough County Fairgrounds, 215 Syndey Washer Road in Dover.

The PRC says it has enough supplies to administer more than 1,000 rabies shots. The event is drive-thru only. Residents and their pets should remain in their vehicles throughout the clinic.

Rabies protection is required

Rabies is a deadly viral disease that can infect mammals, including people and pets. Vaccinating pets against rabies helps protect animals and people from the disease. It also provides an important layer of protection if a pet encounters an infected animal.

Florida law requires all dogs and cats four months or older to be vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian or authorized provider. Following the initial vaccination, the animal must be revaccinated 12 months later, with subsequent vaccination intervals following the vaccine manufacturer's directions.

In Hillsborough County, dogs and cats four months older are required to be up to date with their rabies vaccinations.

A free and easy way to protect pets

For residents attending Sunday's clinic, the event offers an opportunity to get pets up to date on an important vaccination at no cost.

Jahyda, a Hillsborough County resident who recently adopted a kitten from the Pet Resource Center, says the event is a great way for County residents to save some money.

"I think it's a great idea," said Jahyda. "It's really helpful. Especially for those who may not be able to afford the vaccine."

In addition to rabies vaccinations, eligible dogs and cats will receive a microchip, tag, and registration at no cost. Microchipping provides pets with a permanent form of identification that can help reunite them with their owners if they become lost. Keeping registration information current can also help animal services identify a pet and contact its owner.
