Registration is extended through Sept. 18 for adults 50 and older to compete in sports and connect with the community

Hillsborough County has extended the deadline to register for the 45th Annual Tampa Bay Active Life Games. Adults age 50 and older can sign up for the two-week celebration of fitness, friendly competition, and community through Sept. 18.

Organized by Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation in partnership with City of Tampa Parks and Recreation, the Tampa Bay Active Life Games bring together hundreds of adults each year for an Olympics-style competition featuring activities for a variety of skill and fitness levels.

The Games will take place Sept. 28 through Oct. 9 at various locations throughout Hillsborough County.

Mary May, who turned 87 years old this year and is a longtime participant in the Active Life Games, says the event is all about having fun and meeting new people.

"I think it's very healthy for seniors to get out, be active, and participate in the Games," May said. "You don't have to be good at sports. It's about showing up and having a good time."

From pickleball and basketball to golf and other activities, the Games give participants an opportunity to stay moving while having fun and meeting other active adults in the community.

Pickleball is among the most popular offerings, with men's and women's singles and doubles events, as well as mixed doubles. Participants can also compete in a variety of other sports, including bowling, shuffleboard, billiards, bag toss, darts, and more.

The Games are more than competition. Staying physically active can help older adults maintain strength, mobility, and overall wellness. Participating in group activities also provides an opportunity to build friendships and stay connected. Whether participants are longtime athletes or simply looking for a fun way to try something new, the Active Life Games offer an opportunity to get moving, stay healthy, and engage with the community.

For May, having something to work toward makes staying active even more rewarding.
"The more active I am, the better I feel," said May. "The Active Life Games provide everybody involved a goal to reach toward."

The Tampa Bay Active Life Games also serve as a regional qualifier for the Florida Senior Games, giving participants an opportunity to compete for a chance to advance to the state competition.

Registration costs $35 per participant, which allows participants to compete in multiple events. Participants must be aged 50 or older to take part.

The Games begin with an opening ceremony and Torch Lighting Walk at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 28 at Barksdale Senior Center. The Games conclude with closing ceremonies at 11 a.m. Oct. 9 at Northdale Park.

With registration now open through Sept. 18, older adults looking for a new challenge, or simply a fun way to stay active and connected, still have time to join in on the fun.

"When you get older, staying active is so important. It keeps your mind alert, and it keeps you motivated," May said. "You're never too old to play. You get old when you stop."
