Hillsborough County, Fla. (May 18, 2026) - Residents who travel along Big Bend Road between U.S. 41 and Covington Garden Drive will have multiple opportunities to review the plans to widen the road and improve the corridor in May.
An in-person engagement is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 21 at Eisenhower Middle School. An online version of the public engagement will be available May 21 through June 3 at HCFL.gov/HCEngage. In both engagement opportunities, residents can review the plans for the road-widening and corridor improvement project.
The purpose of the project is to improve capacity, enhance safety, and provide operational improvements along the corridor. Safe mobility for all roadway users, regardless of mode of travel, has been considered and incorporated into the project design. Planned improvements include:
- Resurfacing and widening of approximately .75 miles of existing four-lane divided rural highway to a six-lane urban typical section.
- Addition of curb and gutter and closed drainage system.
- Addition of 10-foot sidewalks on each side of the roadway.
- Addition of a median ranging from 11 to 36 feet.
- Addition of a southbound left-turn lane at the intersection of Kings Lake Drive and Old Big Bend Road.
- Addition of a traffic signal at Old Big Bend Road and Kings Lake Drive.
- Conversion of the intersection of Covington Garden Drive and Big Bend Road to a three-leg intersection. Old Big Bend Road will no longer be accessible at this intersection.
- Milling and resurfacing of Kings Lake Drive from Big Bend Road to approximately 400 feet north of Old Big Bend Road.
- Construction of approximately .25 miles of concrete trail along Waterset Boulevard to connect the Scenic Drive trailhead to the planned sidewalk along the south side of Big Bend Road.
