The vessels will enhance rescue capabilities in flooded areas and improve emergency access during severe weather events
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue (HCFR) has added three new airboats to its Special Operations fleet. The vessels will enhance the department's ability to respond to flooding, hurricanes, and other water-based emergencies across Hillsborough County.
The new airboats are designed to operate in extreme conditions where traditional fire and rescue vehicles cannot reach, including submerged roadways, flooded neighborhoods, and isolated communities cut off by storm surge or heavy rainfall. County officials say the additions will significantly improve response times and expand rescue capabilities during severe weather events.
Strengthening disaster response
The airboats will play a critical role in hurricane preparedness and recovery operations, allowing emergency response officials to access residents trapped by floodwaters, deliver emergency medical aid, and conduct evacuations in areas difficult to reach.
Unlike traditional boats, airboats are propelled by large rear-mounted fans, allowing them to glide over shallow water, debris-filled flood zones, and grassy or muddy terrain. This makes the vessels effective in post-storm environments, where debris and changing water levels can impact access routes.
HCFR officials emphasized that the vessels will be strategically deployed during hurricanes and tropical storms, as well as year-round for swift water rescues and other emergency responses throughout Hillsborough County.
Supporting a growing region
As Hillsborough County continues to grow, so does the demand for advanced emergency response capabilities.
The addition of the airboats builds on HCFR's ongoing investments in specialized equipment and training designed to ensure the safety of residents.
Officials say the new vessels reinforce the department's commitment to preparedness and resilience.
