Community invited to support the Pet Resource Center through kitten shower, adoptions, and lifesaving programs

Spring marks the start of kitten season, the time of year when thousands of newborn kittens enter shelters and rescues across the country, often overwhelming local resources. In preparation for the annual surge, the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center (PRC) is calling on the community to help through education, donations, volunteering, fostering, and adopting.

Attend the Kitten Shower

To help meet the growing need, PRC is hosting a Kitten Shower on Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 440 N. Falkenburg Rd., Tampa, FL 33619. This family-friendly event will allow attendees to meet adoptable pets, enjoy family activities and games, explore enrichment tables, donate kitten supplies, and sign up to foster.

For those interested in donating, PRC is collecting essential supplies such as kitten formula, bottles, soft bedding, and enrichment toys, all of which are critical during this time when many kittens are too young to survive without specialized, around-the-clock care. A full list of items needed can be found here.

Other ways to help

Residents can also make a direct impact by opening their homes to foster kittens until they are old enough for adoption. Volunteers play a key role in feeding, socializing, and monitoring the health of these young pets, helping them prepare for future forever homes. A Bottle Babies 101 class will be available during the April 25 Kitten Shower at 10:30 a.m. for those interested in learning how to care for neonatal kittens.

Anyone interested in growing their family can do so via adopting - one of the most meaningful ways to help. Choosing to adopt not only gives a kitten or cat (or dog) a second chance, but it also helps free up space and resources for other pets in need. To see a list of currently available pets, visit the online kennel.

Additionally, community members who find kittens outdoors are advised to allow time to see if the mother cat returns before intervening. In many cases, mother cats are nearby and best equipped to care for their young. If it is determined that found kittens are stray or orphaned, consider participating in PRC's Wait Until 8 program, which empowers residents to become the at-home caregiver for found kittens until they are 8 weeks old, when they can be returned to PRC for adoption.
