Aging Services recognized two community changemakers for their dedication and impact
In honor of Older Americans Month, Hillsborough County Aging Services proudly presented the 2025 Community Service and Volunteerism Award to two remarkable individuals who have redefined what it means to age with purpose.
This year's honorees, Rubye Gordon and Arthur Phillips, were recognized for their exceptional volunteer service and leadership at the Ruskin Senior Center and throughout the community.
A very familiar face
Rubye Gordon has been a familiar face at the Ruskin Senior Center for over 11 years. A retired military veteran with more than 30 years of service, Rubye now volunteers as the center's lead front desk administrator. She assists with filing paperwork, answers phone calls, and warmly welcomes new and returning members.
Her impact extends well beyond the front desk, however. Rubye devotes time to local food pantries through St. Ann Catholic Church and Bethel Church, collecting and distributing food to those in need. She's also known for her participation in the center chorus, her lessons on historical figures, and quietly helping others with personal food donations. Her dedication and compassion make her a true example of service in action.
Using music to unite
In similar fashion, Arthur Phillips has been volunteering at the Ruskin Senior Center since 2023. As the lead for the Musical Arts Program, he teaches guitar and piano, directs the choir, and uses music to unite participants across languages and cultures. His inclusive classes have boosted participation and built community spirit.
Aside from his musical contributions, Arthur shares his original poetry with members each month and assists in making special events successful. After hurricanes struck the region in late 2024, he volunteered at emergency food pantries and distribution sites, lending a helping hand to those in need. His creativity and generosity have made a lasting impression.
Rubye and Arthur exemplify the theme of this year's Older Americans Month: Flip the Script on Aging. Their stories reflect how older adults are continuing to lead, serve, and inspire.
