Hands-on lessons empower students to build a greener, more resilient community one tree at a time

Hillsborough County helped grow more than just trees in celebration of Arbor Day and Earth Month. It also cultivated environmental stewards of the future.

The County's Environmental Science Division recently partnered with Hillsborough County Public Schools to bring its 2nd Annual Classroom to Canopy initiative to three local schools. Located in the Palm River and Progress Village areas, the schools were Frost and Lamb Elementary and Giunta Middle schools. Through this hands-on program, students learned how trees play a critical role in creating more resilient communities.

At each campus, the students participated in the planting of native and Florida-friendly trees that were donated as part of the County's ongoing efforts to expand the urban tree canopy. With the help of County staff, students helped return soil to the base of each newly planted tree, learning firsthand how strong roots begin with care and knowledge.

Trees are not just landscape features, they are nature's infrastructure. They absorb stormwater, mitigate storm surge, lower local temperatures, and provide vital shade that helps protect against heat-related illnesses.

The Classroom to Canopy initiative aligns with the County's broader goals of sustainability and climate resilience. By planting trees and fostering student awareness about their benefits, the County is investing in a cooler, greener, and safer future for all residents.
